Drug Abuse a Threat to the Society. Drug abuse otherwise known as substance abuse is the continued excessive and unregulated use of a drug or drugs whereby the users take the drugs in amounts and methods that are harmful to themselves and others. Drug abuse is common in the modern society; it has affected all regions.
Common drugs among adolescence are marijuana, cocaine, heroin and prescription drugs. During adolescence, more than half have used a type of drug at least once. For some, as they experience the effects of certain drugs, they will continue to use the drug, which will soon lead to substance abuse.
Youth may end up drinking alcohol and using drugs because of various situations or reasons e.g. youth especially school going drink alcohol, use tobacco and other drug as a result of peer pressure because they may want to feel grown up among their peers, some youth use drugs to relieve boredom and give themselves personal excitement, some use drugs to rebel and get violent without any fear of.
Drug usage is the third huge area of abuse among students in college. The majority of these teens have tried the most common gateway drug, marijuana. Many of these teenagers said they have also tried mushrooms, ecstasy, and speed. Peer pressure has nothing to do with their reasons for drinking, smoking, or doing drugs.
Substance abuse and problematic patterns of substance use among youth can lead to problems at school, cause or aggravate physical and mental health-related issues, promote poor peer relationships, cause motor-vehicle accidents, and place stress on the family.They can also develop into lifelong issues such as substance dependence, chronic health problems, and social and financial consequences. 1.
Teen substance abuse is problematic for several reasons. Teens are still developing important life skills, their identity, likes, and dislikes. If teens begin experimenting with drugs to fit in or gain friends, they can unknowingly set themselves up for a potentially life-threatening habit, making prevention critical.
